In the past, wood fences were used on the majority of residential fences. Whether its a vertical privacy fence in the back yard or a white picket fence in your front yard, wood is used everywhere. In recent times, vinyl has become a popular building material in the construction world. It has also been introduced into the fencing industry and has become one of the main competitors to wood in residential settings. We'll go over some of the comparisons between the two.

Cost
- When you are considering the costs of a fence job, you need to take into account of 3 main factors. The cost of the material itself, the labour and the type of fence installation, and any future maintenance and repair costs that are associated with the fence material. On average, vinyl is more costly per linear sqft compared to some wood options but vinyl fences are typically easier than wood to install. Vinyl is inherently less prone to damage compared to wood and usually requires little repair work. If a repair is eventually needed for a vinyl fence, the cost is higher than a wood fence repair. Vinyl fence repair tend to be larger jobs as there aren't many small jobs with vinyl. When looking at overall costs, there may be a slight edge towards wood fences when compared to vinyl.

Durability
- When it comes to the durability of your fence, vinyl is the better option hands down. Especially cause we live in the pacific northwest as we receive a ton of precipitation over the year. Vinyl fares well in most types of weather and will only be susceptible to damage under extreme cold/hot temperatures which the lower mainland does not experience. As it is an inorganic material, vinyl is also resistant to pests and fungus growth. Even if you use a high quality cedar and have a professional install it, at the end of the day it is still an organic material that can be prone to mother nature. That's not us saying that cedar is not durable, we are just highlighting one of the strengths of a vinyl fence. Vinyl fences takes the win over wood when it comes to durability.

Maintenance
- One of the major benefits of vinyl is the low amount of maintenance work required. To clean a vinyl fence, all that is needed is to hose down any dirt or debris that has been built up on the fence. Wood fences require much more thought into making a maintenance plan as you need different types of solutions for cleaning and for sealing. Not to mention, physically inspecting your fence once in awhile. While the dirt and grime itself may be more apparent on a vinyl fence, vinyl is definitely the winner when it comes down to maintenance.
